Establish Accountability - Introduce milestone/technical reviews
How many times have you been surprised by a colleague or business partner who turns up in your office and reports that the project you believed to be on track was now going to miss its deadlines? Everyone involved had the nodding dog syndrome, and just agreed that everything was fine, when reality indicated something completely different. Milestone or technical reviews can help mitigate that risk. Now, the large, more complex, multi national, multi company-type projects will need many gate reviews, but even small businesses can benefit from simply introducing check points. It allows people to set attainable goals, and also gain valuable feedback from their peers when they get together. Asking for other opinions on your work can be difficult, feelings can get hurt and egos damaged; however, if these are implemented consistently as part of everyday life, people can work past their fragile self images. Review meetings become an open forum to exchange ideas, something that people will invest time and effort in. They will want to be well prepared, because they want to be viewed as competent and capable by their peers. This, in turn, increases the quality of the end product delivered to your customers.
