An IT leadership journey from users to customers
Transform - You are never helpless, you always have a choice

I know it may not always seem like it, but you always have a choice. My boss likes to throw about “a can't is just a can with consequences,” (normally immediately after making a near impossible request) However, he makes a very good point; people spend a lot of time defining what they cannot do or why they cannot do it. I know I have been guilty of this in the past. Are you guilty of it currently? Are you making invisible barriers that you cannot seem to overcome? If so, why not change them? You have already decided, I hope, to at least try and move from users to customers, otherwise why are you still reading this? What could you change today that would remove the helplessness? People hate uncertainty, and usually after a decision to change is made, regardless of the outcome, people start to feel better. They feel that at least the worst may be over. What baby step could you take today, in a situation where you have almost given up? Could you change your supplier, customer or team member? What about your position itself; could you better serve in a different capacity inside your organization? What have you done this month that you would consider resume enhancements? What worthwhile project? What education or certification? Customers always have choices; your team always has choices; and as a leader you always have choices, so why not invest in yourself and chose to make a difference?
