An IT leadership journey from users to customers
Know Yourself - Who are your core team?
After you have established who you are, and have committed to listening to your client, you need to establish “Who your core team members?” This team can either be individuals that you already work with, or positions that you believe need to be incorporated into your team to make it a success. This core team is the ten percent of the organization that gets ninety percent of the work done. They are passionate, curious and challenging. Without this type of team, you will be unable to move the dial from users to customers. Your core team needs to know who you are and be comfortable enough to challenge you. They need to hold you accountable to live the transition you seek, even more so than you are holding them accountable. You must actively seek out people smarter than yourself, from cross disciplines both inside and outside of IT, and forge a core team that trusts, lives, laughs and works together in alignment with team goals you all participate in setting.

Why do you care so much about your core team? Consider a study of over 23,000 employees boiled down to the following percentages, when compared with a soccer team.(1)
  • Only four of the eleven players know which goal is theirs.
  • Out of those four, only two care.
  • Only two out of eleven actually know what their position is and how to play it.
  • Nine out of eleven will actually be competing against their own team, and not their opponents’.

To recap, two out of eleven care, while nine out of eleven are working against organizational goals. You get to build your core team. Do you believe you can improve these odds?
