Build Trust - Set attainable milestones
Without metrics you cannot measure and without measurements you cannot manage, therefore it is important to give your team milestones that they can achieve. Ideally, these milestones will be slightly beyond what your team believes they are capable of today. This provides them a target, something to strive for that, once obtained, will not only increase their skill level, but also their unity as a team. Once, while working inside an IT organization, we decided to start tracking change control success rate. Within a few months, the success rate had jumped twenty percent. This jump had nothing to do with pay for performance, or management scrutiny. Just the fact that we started to monitor made previously bland change review meetings into an arena where participants debated what success looked like, held each other accountable for hitting the maintenance windows and collectively raised the bar. It is your responsibility to raise the bar for your team. What have you done that embodies this recently? What project have you impressed your customers with? How do you track projects today? What are you Key Performance Indicators? Does your team even know what good looks like when they get there? By setting up attainable milestones, you enable your staff to do great things and can change passive attendance to active participation. Having a stake in the game is critical to changing minds.
