An IT leadership journey from users to customers
Innovate - Produce fault-tolerant systems

No one likes to feel stupid; everyone likes to feel like the master of their own domain. So when building something for others, why not make it as easy to master, and as simple to use as possible? Make sure your design is so intuitive that it should not even need a manual. Have you ever picked up a piece of technology and intuitively known how to use it? Was it not a joy to use? Did you not feel almost instantly smarter? Did you recommend that device to someone else? Of course you did! So why not make everything you produce go after that same goal? And if people do run into trouble, make sure the systems are fault-tolerant, so that they can recover gracefully and easily from mistakes. Make sure that they do not have to call and wait for help, unless it is the last possible option. Allow your customers to use, navigate and learn your systems without the need of extensive manuals and training, and they will quickly come devoted followers to the technology solutions you provide to them. Think Apple. Think about the last system you produced. In its default state, was it simple, intuitive and easy to use? If not, why not? What stopped that from being the case? If you could redesign it today, would you? Could you? If the people using your systems are not faceless users, but customers you care about, how much more fault-tolerant would you want the system to be?
