Build Trust - Never surprise your boss or key stakeholders
Communication, communication, communication. Do you think that bosses who shot the messenger were surprised by the news they received? It is imperative that you keep your customers and bosses in the loop on potential issues. Honesty is quite simply the best policy regarding this! If issues arise, air them openly and honestly in front on the right audience. Do not sweep things under the rug and hope that people will not find out. Regular meetings, work breakdown structures, and milestone reviews can all help keep the right people informed.
If you do have to deliver unpleasant or surprising news, make sure that you are the one who delivers it, and do it in person. That way you are better able to gauge reactions rather than complicating matters by reading tones into emails or phone conversations.
