Transform - Live in the process and do not be so goal-focused
This is a particularly tough one for me, because I know that I am prone to getting tunnel vision. As I was writing this book, one evening my boss encouraged me to go to a local bar and not go home. He was unaware that I was writing this at the time, and bemused by my decision to head home. I went home and wrote for about fifteen minutes; what a loser! Due to self-imposed deadlines, I denied myself fun. I managed to get myself wrapped around the axle and completely lose site of the bigger picture, that people are always more important in the long run. There are times to drive, and times to relax, and it really comes back to knowing yourself. This was an early indicator to me that I needed to slow down. Do you have telltale signs that you are close to burning out? By living in the process, you can adapt better to your customers’ needs, and ensure you are not single-minded but are being open to new ideas and ways of working. It provides you with the flexibility and adaptability you need to seek favors when necessary and forgiveness from others. By building a reputation of trust and tolerance, you give gravitas to your decisions about when to stand and fight and when to let things slide. Remember that not every fight it worth having, and that reputation can prove invaluable, both with your customers and your partners. Remember to be true to who you are and lighten up a little; this is not a practice; you need to love the life you are leading.
