An IT leadership journey from users to customers
Establish Accountability - Hire the fewest number of smart people you can find

Have you ever been to your favorite bar or sporting venue, just after they have opened for business? They usually have an eerie feel to them; there is no energy, no vitality and no buzz about the place. But wait a while as the location starts to fill up, and you can feel the energy grow with the density of people. The same can be true of work. If you have a long time before something is due, you will procrastinate. If you have an expansive budget you will not be careful with your pennies. However, if you have scarcity, people get creative. Hunger is a great motivator! By surrounding yourself with smart people (as few as you can find to get the job done), you create an energetic team, and one that usually has a laser focus. Your customers can feed off this energy in a way users never will.

The advantage of this approach is because smart people usually like to work with other smart people. They will not be in a huge hurry to simply fill an open position, but rather will wait for an ideal candidate. Also, as they are likely to hold themselves and the team to higher levels of accountability, when they do collectively decide that your teams needs to grow, you can rest assured that they have reached their maximum capacity, and now need help to get the job done. Smart, motivated people working on something they believe in hold each other accountable without the need for management intervention.
