Innovate - Facilitate opportunities to experiment
You must not only lead by example, but also set up opportunities for your team to experiment. When a new intern starts, I always explain the internship is a padded room and safe place where they cannot harm themselves or others. By allowing others to experiment, you show that you trust them, that you believe in them, and that if the experiment fails, it will be okay. Experiments have gone wrong throughout history, but have led to a multitude of discoveries that would never have been possible otherwise. It is one thing to tell your staff to experiment; it is another to own the responsibility to make it happen. So make sure you are assigning a percentage of your team’s time to projects that will require them to go off and experiment.
