Know Yourself - Establish personal guidelines
Determine when to stand and fight. This is one I struggle with most of all, as there are no real hard and fast rules. Again, it all comes down to context and the personalities involved. However, earlier we talked about it being more important to stay true to your beliefs than to be successful. To ensure you are living up to this lofty goal, you need to work out when it appropriate to fight, and when it’s better to simply avoid conflict altogether. I enjoy a lively debate of ideas, and therefore have a tendency to believe that you should never duck a fight, but that by diving into the issue, a better solution will be the outcome. However, not everyone agrees with this opinion, and in the past I have alienated people by this approach. Not every fight is worth having, and not every victory is worth winning. By knowing yourself and what is most important to you and your customer, you can identify the signs that best indicate when to take a stand or when to live to fight another day.
