Nourish Relationships - Eliminate them
How many times have “they” bitten you? Those other people, the “them,” those who fail to deliver, who let things slide, who do not care. What if there was no more “them,” but only “we”? The intangible “them”, the lack of clear responsibility, makes it too easy not to act. Under the cover of a fog, no one knows what you are not doing and you can just blame “them”! “We” has the opposite impact; “we” enables, while “them” paralyzes. The intangible “them” dehumanizes and allows us not to care about who is going to do it (maybe “it” is a menial job we do not want to do). So we are happy assuming someone else will do it. Again, think about “it” from a user’s point of view. If your customers are merely users, they will always be a problem. They will always be “them,” the faceless irritations your superstar staff must deal with and mollycoddle. But if “they” become “us,” they can become customers and partners. So lead by example and eliminate the concept of “them.” Get your colleagues thinking and acting as a team.
