Transform - Drive strategies based on data

Well, what else are you basing strategies on? The answer may surprise you. We have all seen or at least heard of business intelligence projects that promise the world but deliver far short of that. This leaves the business to second-guess its direction and strategy. Strategies based on data, when implemented correctly, are repeatable, consistent and deliver expected results. They remove strong personalities and personal biases, which can so often cloud our judgment. Earlier we discussed how politics can stop the right work from getting done, but strategies based on data can be a tool to guard against this, as they provide directions that are easy to document and justify. Also, by following the data rather than someone’s gut feeling, it minimizes surprises, as you have already vetted the alternatives and exposed potential landmines. When personalities are kept in check and data brought to the forefront, it can help keep people focused and promotes discussion about the pertinent information at hand. It helps prevent people from focusing on their pet project, but rather provides an open forum to discuss the various options surrounding the particular problem you are trying to solve. It also democratizes the data to make it available to all parties in the process, because you never know where the next insight is going to hail from.
