Anyway, I was telling him about a process I’ve been running for the past couple of years, when he stopped me and asked, “Why are you doing something that is so obviously broken?” I protested that it’s a budget resource-constraint type thing. To which he retorted, “Sounds like if you fix the core issue, the budget resource-constraint thing goes away.” It pains me to write this, but he was right! But without his objective external view, I would never have seen this.
So at least once a month, please reach out to someone smarter or more experienced than you that you trust professionally. It can be coffee, lunch, or just a quick call, but for the most part, not only will they be delighted to hear from you, but the time you are investing by slowing down may return huge dividends later. An external viewpoint can energize you as your share success stories from your journey from customers to users. You will doubtless hit road blocks along the way, and talking to smart people can help inspire and reinvigorate.
