Establish Accountability - Decision making requires art and science
What kind of crazy talk is this? We are engineers; of course what we do is science-based. We do not need any crazy artistic thinking involved in the decision-making process; everything is black or white in IT, right? If only life were so simple. Remember, people use tone and inflection to indicate their moods or opinions, more than the words themselves. Whenever people are involved, there can be no cookie-cutter solutions. Problems have to be understood, solutions scoped, agreements made, grace offered, and all these things come down to balancing art and science. How many times have you witnessed a perfectly elegant engineering solution fail due to failure to factor in the user? Would it be so easy to ignore them if they were customers?
