Awareness of Pitfalls - Change takes time

Boy, did I ever learn this the hard way; I used to charge in at the pace I felt was best for the organization, and expected everyone else to keep up or just quit. The trouble is that organizations do not work that way; some of the time you are only as fast as your slowest team member, so try to remember that change can only take place at the pace the organization can digest it. You will need small wins and baby steps. Do not bully or cajole people. Share your vision, and give them time to get onboard or out of the way. Set realistic timelines; ensure you have executive buy-in and then give everyone the chance to get onboard. If you are impatient like me, give them three times the number of chances to get onboard as you think is reasonable, and then accept that not everyone will take the journey with you. Some will leave by choice; others may be encouraged to do so, but make sure you are allowing people the time to make the decision either to embrace the new way or reject it and move on.
