Information Technology, Pimps and Drug Dealers

An IT leadership journey from users to customers
Innovate - Build things to change, not to last

Castles were built to last, built to stand wave after wave of invasion. Do you think technology is moving more quickly now than it was back then? How can you possibly build inflexible systems with centuries or decades of life expectancy, considering today's pace of change? You need to give your users a range of options with which they can feel empowered to select from. You need an adaptive infrastructure that allows you to say “yes” to the correct business opportunities. The biggest challenge here can be retooling how your staff thinks. “Build to change” means not building fiefdoms, but putting the company needs in front of your own, and committing to evolve and grow with future trends. By being adaptive, your customers come looking to you to provide solutions. This is no longer a world when Henry Ford's famous quote, “You can have it any color you want, as long as you want black,”5 will work. Think about how many systems in your organization have run out of space or capacity. Think about the time you had to expand to a new data center for the sake of one more rack. Planning with flexibility in mind can get you a seat at your customer’s table, far easier than offering them a one-size-fits-all solution.
