Know Yourself - Be faithful to your beliefs

Being faithful to your beliefs is more important than success, and reaching your potential is more important that reaching your goals. In our fast-paced world, we always seem to be reaching for the next goal, always looking for new ways to define and measure success. Think about your last purchase; was it because you needed it, or merely wanted it? Was it for you, or to impress others? As we move farther and farther away as a society from producing tangible goods and focus more and more on services and knowledge, we must define what personal success is. Previous generations had to work to provide basic necessities like food and shelter. Most current IT staff members are looking for more; they are looking to be fulfilled at a more meaningful level.

Which do you prioritize today, your goals or your potential? How does this reflect on you to your staff? What does your boss want you to focus on? Over the long haul, people want to be excellent at what they do, have the ability to self-direct their own work efforts, and know they are working toward a goal or purpose. If you have to sacrifice your beliefs for what you do, you are probably doing the wrong thing to begin with.
