Nourish Relationships - Ask for forgiveness, not permission
As you nurture relationships, you need to empower your staff. Hopefully you have a team you trust and enjoy sharing the better part of your day with. If that is the case, make sure they know they are able to make decisions. My boss always asks, “What is the worst that can happen?” Depending on his mood, he may also follow up with, “Is someone going to cancel Christmas? Or take away my birthday? I do not think so!” So lead by example, and take action when it makes sense to take action. Encourage others to the same. By building trust in your team, you allow others to fail forward and learn from their mistakes. How do you ever expect your team to learn if they cannot experiment? How can they truly experiment if they have to seek permission before the act? Now granted, this may ruffle a few feathers inside your organization, but like we have already discussed, your team needs to know that you have their backs, and letting them act on the best information available to them without formally needing to get the “I’s” dotted and “T’s” crossed allows them more autonomy in their roles and a greater chance to reach their potential.
