Establish Accountability - Accept responsibility for future leaders
You are going to live forever, right? The company and your department are going to rest on your shoulders for all eternity; yes? So, if you do not believe that, what have you done recently to ensure that the future leaders of your team are being coached towards success? What are the three pieces of business advice you wish you had known, and would have appreciated at the start of your career? For example, almost everyone knows the phrases “Context is king,” but I never fully appreciated how true that was until grad school - a full fifteen years after my first internship. Context is king.
People do what they want.
As much as I hoped it was about the technology, it is always about the people.
Whom do you see on your team who has talent? What development opportunities do you see for them? Have you talked to them about it? This will be a challenge for most IT professionals, because we are brilliant at technology, and lousy with people, for the most part. Now, throughout this book, we have focused on transforming users in customers into our team’s mindset. If you treated your team like customers, and not employees, how would it change your responsibility to their future leadership capabilities? If you are not committed to developing your best talent, chances are that someone else is, and is already looking for ways to attract them.
